ferric derisomaltose

Ferric derisomaltose is an intravenous iron replacement product used to treat iron deficiency anemia, particularly in adults who cannot tolerate or have not responded to oral iron therapy. It consists of a complex of iron (III) hydroxide and derisomaltose, an oligosaccharide carbohydrate. The drug works by releasing bioavailable iron in a controlled manner, which binds to transferrin for transport to erythroid precursor cells where it is incorporated into hemoglobin. This mechanism allows for effective replenishment of body iron stores with a reduced risk of rapid free iron release and toxicity compared to some other parenteral irons. Ferric derisomaltose was developed by Pharmacosmos Therapeutics and received FDA approval in January 2020[1][2][3][4].
