Ferric hydroxide adipate is an investigational gastrointestinal phosphate binder and nutritional iron supplement originally developed at MRC Human Nutrition Research (Cambridge, UK). It is a nanostructured mineral complex composed of ferric iron cores stabilized by the dietary organic acid, adipic acid. The compound's primary therapeutic utility lies in its ability to bind dietary phosphate within the gastrointestinal tract, forming insoluble iron-phosphate complexes that are excreted rather than absorbed. This mechanism is intended to manage hyperphosphatemia in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Additionally, because the iron is released and absorbed in a regulated manner, the compound serves as a source of bioavailable iron for the treatment of iron deficiency, potentially offering better gastrointestinal tolerability compared to traditional ferrous sulfate supplements.
