ferric maltol

Ferric maltol is an oral iron replacement therapy used to treat iron deficiency in adults. It consists of a complex of ferric (iron III) ion with three molecules of maltol, which increases the bioavailability of iron compared to traditional ferrous salts. After oral administration, the complex dissociates in the gut; the released iron is absorbed primarily in the duodenum and ileum via mechanisms that may involve beta 3 integrin or divalent metal transporter 1. Once absorbed into circulation, iron binds to transferrin for transport and ferritin for storage. Ferric maltol is indicated specifically for patients with low iron stores or anemia due to chronic conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease or chronic kidney disease[1][3][4][5]. The drug was first approved in Europe in 2016 and received FDA approval in July 2019[5].
