Overview

Ferric oxyhydroxide is an inorganic compound with the formula FeO(OH), also known as iron(III) oxide-hydroxide. It is used as a phosphate binder to treat hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly those on dialysis[1][3][4]. The drug acts by binding dietary phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract through ligand exchange between its hydroxyl groups and dietary phosphate, forming an insoluble complex that is excreted in feces[5]. This reduces serum phosphorus levels and the calcium-phosphorus product. Ferric oxyhydroxide itself is practically insoluble and not systemically absorbed. It constitutes the core of natural ferritin and exists as a colloid in pharmaceutical preparations[1][2].
