Ferric polymaltose (also known as iron(III)-hydroxide polymaltose complex) is an oral macromolecular iron preparation used to treat iron deficiency, with or without anemia. It consists of polynuclear iron(III) hydroxide cores bound to a partially hydrolyzed dextrin (polymaltose) carrier. Unlike traditional ferrous salts, ferric polymaltose is non-ionic, which prevents the release of free radicals, minimizes gastrointestinal irritation, and allows for controlled, active absorption of iron through the mucosal cell surface. Once absorbed, the iron is transported by transferrin to the bone marrow for incorporation into hemoglobin or stored in ferritin. Zenith Technology Corporation Limited has conducted clinical studies, including a Phase 1 single-dose, crossover pilot study in New Zealand, to evaluate the pharmacokinetics and relative bioavailability of new generic formulations of ferric polymaltose tablets compared to innovator products under diet-controlled conditions.
