Ferric pyrophosphate liposomal is an oral iron replacement therapy that utilizes liposomal or sucrosomial encapsulation technology to enhance the bioavailability and gastrointestinal tolerability of iron. By protecting the ferric pyrophosphate within a phospholipid bilayer or a membrane of sucrose esters of fatty acids, the formulation allows the iron to pass through the gastric environment without direct contact with the mucosa, thereby minimizing common side effects such as gastric pain, nausea, and constipation. This delivery mechanism facilitates absorption through the intestinal M-cells and the lymphatic system, bypassing the traditional DMT1 pathway which is often downregulated by hepcidin in inflammatory states. It is particularly indicated for patients with iron deficiency anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or post-bariatric surgery, where conventional oral iron salts are often poorly tolerated or ineffective.
