Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Oral liposomal iron is an advanced formulation of iron, typically ferric pyrophosphate, encapsulated within a phospholipid bilayer membrane. This liposomal delivery system is designed to enhance the bioavailability of iron by protecting it from degradation in the gastrointestinal tract and facilitating absorption through the intestinal mucosa via endocytosis (M-cells), bypassing the conventional divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) pathway. This mechanism significantly reduces the gastrointestinal side effects—such as nausea, abdominal pain, and constipation—commonly associated with traditional oral iron salts. It is primarily utilized for the treatment and prophylaxis of iron deficiency anemia, including in specialized populations such as preterm neonates and patients with chronic kidney disease or inflammatory bowel disease. In a Phase 1 clinical trial led by Ain Shams University, it is being investigated as an early prophylactic agent for iron deficiency anemia in preterm neonates.
