Overview

Ferric subsulfate is a topical hemostatic (stypic) agent used to control minor bleeding after superficial surgical procedures such as shave, punch, or cervical biopsies. It acts by causing agglutination and denaturation of surface proteins (such as fibrinogen) through the action of ferric ions and its highly acidic pH, resulting in rapid local hemostasis—typically within 20 seconds of application. The drug is only for external use and should not be ingested or applied to the eyes. Commonly known as Monsel’s solution or Astringyn, it may cause persistent hyperpigmentation at the site of application due to deposition of ferric salts in tissue[1][2][3][5][6].
