Ferrous bisglycinate is a chelated form of iron in which a ferrous ion (Fe2+) is bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. This structure enhances gastrointestinal absorption and reduces common side effects associated with other oral iron supplements, such as stomach irritation and constipation[4][5][6]. It is primarily used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia—including anemia due to chronic disease or pregnancy—by replenishing body stores of elemental iron necessary for hemoglobin synthesis and red blood cell production[1][5][9]. After oral administration, it dissociates in the acidic environment of the stomach to release free iron and glycine[8]. Ferrous bisglycinate has been marketed both as a dietary supplement and as an ingredient for food fortification since at least 1989[7][8].
