Overview

Ferrous carbonate (FeCO3) is an inorganic iron salt primarily utilized as a nutritional supplement and industrial chemical. In clinical practice, it serves as an oral iron source for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia, often co-administered with ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) to enhance gastrointestinal absorption. Beyond human medicine, it is widely authorized as a mineral feed additive (E1) for livestock, particularly for adult animals. Industrially, ferrous carbonate is employed in wastewater management to sequester sulfides and phosphates, as a corrosion product (siderite) in steel pipelines, and as a precursor in the development of anode materials for high-capacity lithium-ion batteries. It also occurs naturally as the mineral siderite in geological formations and ancient soils.
