Overview

Ferrous gluconate is an oral iron supplement used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia. It replaces iron found in hemoglobin, myoglobin, and enzymes, allowing the transportation of oxygen via hemoglobin. Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin (the protein in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to tissues) and myoglobin (the muscle protein that stores and releases oxygen). Beyond oxygen transport, iron is crucial for cellular processes, enzyme and hormone synthesis, DNA synthesis/repair, electron transport, and energy metabolism. Hematologic response typically begins within 3-10 days of treatment, with peak reticulocytosis occurring in 5-10 days and hemoglobin values increasing in approximately 2-4 weeks.
