Overview

Ferrous lactate is an iron(II) salt of lactic acid with the chemical formula C6H10FeO6. It appears as a greenish-white crystalline powder and is soluble in water. Ferrous lactate acts as a haematinic agent by supplying bioavailable ferrous (Fe2+) ions that are essential for hemoglobin synthesis and red blood cell production. Its primary use is as an oral iron supplement to prevent and treat iron deficiency anemia in humans and animals. It may also be used as a food additive for color retention or acidity regulation[1][3][6][8]. The mechanism of action involves replenishing body stores of elemental iron, which is incorporated into hemoglobin and myoglobin to support oxygen transport in blood and muscle tissue.
