Ferrous succinate + vitamin C is a combination therapy consisting of the iron supplement ferrous succinate and the antioxidant vitamin C (ascorbic acid). This specific regimen was evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial (NCT02631668) by Huashan Hospital, Fudan University, for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia in adults. Ferrous succinate provides a source of divalent iron (Fe2+), which is the form of iron absorbed in the duodenum and upper jejunum. Vitamin C is included to enhance iron absorption by maintaining iron in its ferrous state and creating an acidic environment in the gastrointestinal tract, thereby preventing the oxidation of iron to the less absorbable ferric (Fe3+) form. The trial aimed to determine if the addition of 200 mg of vitamin C to 100 mg of ferrous succinate three times daily significantly improves hemoglobin recovery and iron stores compared to iron supplementation alone.
