ferrous sulfate

**Ferrous sulfate** is an inorganic ferrous iron salt used primarily as oral iron-replacement therapy for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. It dissociates in the gastrointestinal tract to provide absorbable ferrous iron, replenishing iron available for hemoglobin synthesis, erythropoiesis, and restoration of body iron stores. Oral absorption can be reduced by inflammation-associated hepcidin elevation, including in active inflammatory bowel disease and some patients with chronic kidney disease. It is available in multiple immediate-release oral presentations, including tablets and liquid products.
