Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fertifol is a pharmaceutical-grade folic acid (Vitamin B9) supplement developed by Effik, specifically formulated at a 400 µg dose for women during the preconception period and the first trimester of pregnancy. Its primary indication is the primary prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs), such as spina bifida and anencephaly, in the developing fetus. Folic acid is a critical cofactor in one-carbon metabolism, where it is converted into tetrahydrofolate derivatives essential for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines (DNA and RNA) and the methylation of homocysteine to methionine. Adequate folate levels are vital for the rapid cell division and tissue growth that occur during early embryogenesis.
