Drug intelligence / Profile preview
FertiStart is a highly purified human menopausal gonadotrophin (hMG) preparation containing follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in a 1:1 ratio. Derived from the urine of postmenopausal women, it is developed by IBSA (Institut Biochimique SA) for use in fertility treatments. The drug mimics the physiological actions of endogenous gonadotrophins by binding to their respective G protein-coupled receptors on the ovaries. Specifically, the FSH component promotes the recruitment and maturation of ovarian follicles, while the LH component supports steroidogenesis, particularly the production of androgens that are subsequently aromatized to estrogens. FertiStart is primarily indicated for the induction of ovulation in women with hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction and for the stimulation of multifollicular development in patients undergoing assisted reproductive technologies (ART), such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).
