ferucarbotran + human islets is a specialized cell therapy product consisting of donor-derived human pancreatic islets of Langerhans that have been ex vivo labeled with the superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticle ferucarbotran. This combination is primarily developed to facilitate the non-invasive tracking and longitudinal monitoring of islet grafts following transplantation into patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. The human islets provide the biological function of insulin secretion to restore glycemic control, while the ferucarbotran serves as an MRI contrast agent. By creating local magnetic field inhomogeneities, ferucarbotran significantly reduces T2 and T2* relaxation times, appearing as distinct hypointense areas (signal voids) on Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This allows clinicians to monitor the localization, distribution, and potential rejection or loss of the transplanted islet mass, addressing a major challenge in cell-based regenerative medicine.
