ferula assa-foetida

Ferula assa-foetida is an oleo-gum-resin obtained from the roots of the Ferula assa-foetida plant, a perennial herb native to Iran and Afghanistan. The dried sap, commonly known as asafoetida, is used both as a spice and in traditional medicine. It contains resins (40–64%), gums (25%), and essential oils (10–17%). Asafoetida has been traditionally used for its antispasmodic, carminative, expectorant, laxative, sedative, stimulant, emmenagogue (promotes menstruation), vermifuge (expels worms), and blood-thinning properties. It is widely employed in Indian systems of medicine such as Ayurveda and Unani for digestive issues like flatulence and indigestion; respiratory conditions including asthma and bronchitis; nervous disorders such as hysteria; menstrual problems; intestinal parasites; epilepsy; whooping cough; influenza; ulcers; low stomach acid levels; hypertension due to its hypotensive effect. Modern research suggests it possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antifungal, antiviral, anticancer chemopreventive effects among others[2][5][6][8][10]. Its mechanism of action includes increasing digestive enzyme activity and bile secretion[2], relaxing smooth muscle spasms[5], thinning blood[6], lowering blood pressure[6], exhibiting antioxidant activity via phenolic compounds such as tannins/flavonoids[2]. However evidence from clinical trials remains limited.
