The extract is typically prepared from a non-toxic chemotype of the plant or processed to remove ferulenol, a toxic prenylated coumarin with anticoagulant properties. Its primary active constituent is ferutinin, a sesquiterpenic alcohol ester that acts as an agonist at estrogen receptors, imparting phytoestrogenic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative properties. Ferula communis extract is primarily investigated as a nutraceutical or botanical research compound for the relief of postmenopausal discomfort and sexual dysfunction, and has also been studied preclinically as an adjunct to tamoxifen chemotherapy in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.
