Ferumoxytol is an intravenous iron replacement product composed of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles coated with a semi-synthetic carbohydrate shell. It is primarily used to treat iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD), or in those who cannot tolerate or have not responded adequately to oral iron therapy. The drug works by replenishing body iron stores, enabling the production of red blood cells. After administration, the complex is taken up by macrophages in the reticuloendothelial system, where iron is released and either stored as ferritin or transferred to plasma transferrin for delivery to erythroid precursor cells for hemoglobin synthesis[1][2][3][4]. Ferumoxytol has also been explored as a diagnostic aid due to its superparamagnetic properties[6].
