Overview

Festuca elatior pollen extract, also known as Meadow Fescue pollen extract, is a standardized allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the Festuca elatior grass species. [2] It is a biological product used for both the diagnosis and treatment of grass pollen allergies. [3, 6, 9] For diagnosis, it is administered via percutaneous (prick) or intradermal skin tests to identify sensitivity to this specific pollen. [9] As a therapeutic agent, it is used in allergen immunotherapy, administered through subcutaneous injections or sublingually, to treat allergic conditions such as allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma. [2, 9] The mechanism of action involves inducing immune tolerance by repeatedly exposing the body to the allergenic proteins in the extract. This process aims to modulate the immune system's response, shifting it from a hypersensitive IgE-mediated reaction to a more tolerant state, thereby reducing allergic symptoms. [13] Festuca elatior pollen extract is manufactured by several companies, including LETI Pharma, Greer Laboratories, and Jubilant HollisterStier, and is often a component in multi-grass pollen mixtures for immunotherapy.
