Overview

Festuca pratensis pollen, also known as Meadow Fescue grass pollen, is a standardized allergenic extract derived from the pollen of the *Festuca pratensis* plant. It is a biologic product primarily used for both the diagnosis of and immunotherapy for grass pollen allergies. The extract is used in skin tests to confirm sensitivity and in immunotherapy to reduce allergic symptoms like hay fever and rhinitis in patients with confirmed allergies. The mechanism of action involves inducing immune tolerance to grass pollen allergens, thereby reducing IgE-mediated allergic responses. Formulated as a glycerinated solution, it is administered via percutaneous, intradermal, or subcutaneous routes. The product, which received initial U.S. approval in 1997, is manufactured by companies including Greer Laboratories, Inc. and ALK-Abello, Inc., often as a component in standardized grass pollen mixtures.
