Overview

Fetal retinal pigment epithelium (fRPE) is a cell therapy involving the transplantation of RPE cells derived from human fetal tissue into the subretinal space. The therapy is designed to replace dysfunctional or lost native RPE cells in patients with retinal degenerative diseases like dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD). By restoring the RPE layer, the treatment aims to provide metabolic support to photoreceptors, phagocytose shed outer segments, and maintain the blood-retinal barrier, ultimately preserving vision and preventing further disease progression. The use of fetal-derived cells is based on their high proliferative capacity and potential for integration compared to adult primary cells.
