Overview

Feverfew extract is a preparation derived from the leaves of the feverfew plant (*Tanacetum parthenium*). It contains active compounds such as parthenolide, flavonoid glycosides, and pinenes[7]. Feverfew extract is primarily used as a dietary supplement for the prophylaxis of migraine headaches, with some evidence suggesting it can reduce the frequency and pain intensity of attacks[1][4][10]. Proposed mechanisms include inhibition of serotonin release from platelets, inhibition of neutrophil granule release, modulation of the GABAergic system (based on preclinical data), anti-inflammatory effects (by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and prostaglandin synthesis), and antispasmodic/vasorelaxant actions[4][5][7][8][10]. Laboratory studies suggest antibacterial, antiprotozoal, and antioxidant properties, but these are not clinically established[10].
