Proposed mechanisms include inhibition of serotonin release from platelets, inhibition of neutrophil granule release, modulation of the GABAergic system (based on preclinical data), anti-inflammatory effects (by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and prostaglandin synthesis), and antispasmodic/vasorelaxant actions[4][5][7][8][10]. Laboratory studies suggest antibacterial, antiprotozoal, and antioxidant properties, but these are not clinically established[10].
