Overview

Fexofenadine is a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives), such as runny nose; sneezing; red or itchy eyes; itching of the nose or throat; and skin rash. It works by selectively blocking peripheral histamine H1 receptors in the body—preventing histamine from binding and triggering allergy symptoms. Unlike first-generation antihistamines that cross the blood-brain barrier and cause sedation or drowsiness by acting on central nervous system H1 receptors, fexofenadine is less likely to cause drowsiness due to its selectivity for peripheral receptors. The drug was FDA approved in 1996[1][2][3][4][5][8].
