Drug intelligence / Profile preview
FhHDM-1 (Fasciola hepatica helminth defence molecule 1) is a parasite-derived 68-mer cathelicidin-like peptide originally isolated from the excretory-secretory products of the liver fluke *Fasciola hepatica*. It is being developed for the prevention and treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, including type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis. FhHDM-1 acts by modulating macrophage function, preventing endolysosomal acidification, and inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation and subsequent IL-1β secretion. Additionally, FhHDM-1 localizes to the pancreas where it directly promotes pancreatic beta cell survival and function by activating the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, protecting them from cytokine-induced apoptosis without inducing proliferation.
