Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fast-acting insulin aspart, marketed under the brand name Fiasp, is a rapid-acting insulin analog developed by Novo Nordisk for the treatment of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a modified formulation of insulin aspart that includes two specific excipients: niacinamide (vitamin B3), which increases the speed of initial insulin absorption into the bloodstream, and L-arginine, which serves as a stabilizing agent. This formulation allows for a faster onset of action (approximately 2.5 minutes) compared to conventional insulin aspart (NovoLog/NovoRapid), more closely mimicking the physiological prandial insulin response. While the standard commercial concentration is 100 U/mL, Novo Nordisk has also investigated 200 U/mL formulations in Phase 1 clinical trials to evaluate pharmacokinetic properties in patients with Type 1 diabetes.
