Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fibrex is a dry powder fibrin sealant developed by CryoLife (now Artivion) for use as a topical hemostatic agent during surgery. It is a combination of highly purified human fibrinogen and human thrombin, which are processed into a dry, sprayable powder. When applied to a bleeding site, the thrombin converts the fibrinogen into fibrin, forming a stable clot that promotes hemostasis. Unlike liquid fibrin sealants that require thawing or mixing and precise temperature control, Fibrex was designed to be stored at room temperature and applied directly from a delivery device, offering greater convenience in the operating room. Development was halted in 2014 after Phase 2 clinical trials failed to demonstrate significant superiority over existing hemostatic agents like Gelfoam.
