Overview

Fibrimage is a technetium-99m (99mTc) labeled synthetic peptide radiopharmaceutical developed for the diagnostic imaging of acute venous thromboembolism, specifically deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The agent utilizes a small peptide sequence (P217) that exhibits high affinity and selectivity for fibrin, a key structural protein in blood clots, over its precursor fibrinogen. By binding directly to fibrin within a thrombus, Fibrimage allows for the visualization of active clot formation using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. This targeted approach aims to provide a non-invasive and more accurate alternative to traditional imaging modalities like ultrasound or venography, particularly in cases where those methods are inconclusive. The development was primarily led by Curium, following its acquisition of Mallinckrodt's nuclear medicine business.
