Fibrin glue is a biological adhesive and hemostatic agent composed of fibrinogen and thrombin, which together mimic the final stage of the natural coagulation cascade to form a stable fibrin clot. In a Phase 3 clinical trial led by Dr. Alejandro González-Ojeda at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), this biological adhesive was evaluated for its ability to prevent surgical complications in patients undergoing living-related-donor kidney transplantation for end-stage renal disease. The study, which involved 157 recipients, demonstrated that the application of fibrin glue via a spray technique significantly reduced the incidence of postoperative complications such as lymphoceles, urinary leaks, and hematomas, thereby potentially improving graft function and reducing patient morbidity.
