Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fibrin sealant FS2, marketed under the brand name **Evicel**, is a human plasma-derived biologic product developed by **OMRIX Biopharmaceuticals** (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) in partnership with **Ethicon**. It is a two-component hemostatic agent consisting of pooled human fibrinogen and human thrombin. When the two components are mixed and applied topically to a surgical site, they mimic the final stage of the natural blood coagulation cascade: thrombin enzymatically converts fibrinogen into fibrin, which then polymerizes to form a stable, adherent clot. This mechanism provides rapid hemostasis and is particularly effective in controlling bleeding where conventional surgical techniques like sutures or cautery are impractical. Evicel is notable for being bovine-free and aprotinin-free. It is indicated for use as an adjunct to hemostasis in patients undergoing surgery when control of bleeding by standard surgical techniques is ineffective or impractical, with specific clinical validation in liver and vascular surgeries.
