Fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF‑1), also known as acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF), is a member of the fibroblast growth factor family and functions as a potent angiogenesis-inducing agent. It is a heparin-binding protein involved in embryogenesis and tissue repair processes such as angiogenesis and wound healing. Mechanistically it binds to specific fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs) on cell surfaces to activate signaling pathways that promote cell proliferation and tissue regeneration. Therapeutics containing human FGF‑1 are being developed for diseases including coronary artery disease and diabetic foot ulcers. Venturis Therapeutics is developing recombinant human FGF‑1 for these indications[5][6][2].
