Fibrostat is a topical small molecule cream containing 1,4-diaminobutane (putrescine) as its active ingredient. Developed by researchers at the University of Manitoba, it is specifically designed for the prevention and treatment of hypertrophic scars. The drug's mechanism of action involves the inhibition of tissue transglutaminase, an enzyme that facilitates the cross-linking of type III procollagen within the wound matrix. By interfering with this enzymatic process, Fibrostat aims to modulate scar maturation and prevent the development of raised, firm hypertrophic scars. It has been evaluated in Phase 2 and Phase 3 clinical trials, including randomized, double-blind, split-body studies in patients undergoing mammoplasty (breast reduction) to assess its efficacy in preventing post-surgical scarring.
