Overview

Fibrostop refers to a pipeline of topical therapeutic candidates, including Fibrostop 1 (FS1) and Fibrostop 2 (FS2), designed to treat dermal fibroproliferative disorders such as hypertrophic scars and keloids. Fibrostop 1 is a formulation of the amino acid metabolite kynurenine, while Fibrostop 2 is based on kynurenic acid. These compounds are endogenous catabolites of tryptophan that act by stimulating the expression of Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) and Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3) in dermal fibroblasts. This induction of MMPs facilitates the degradation of excess collagen deposits, which are the primary cause of raised, itchy, and red pathological scarring. Developed by researchers at the University of British Columbia, the FS2 formulation has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials for safety and tolerability in healthy volunteers.
