Overview
ficus awkeotsang makino extract (FAE), also known as jelly fig extract, is a botanical substance derived from the achenes (seeds) of the *Ficus awkeotsang* plant, which is native to Taiwan. The extract is rich in polyphenolic compounds and flavonoids, which imbue it with significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Its primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway, which results in the downregulation of several pro-inflammatory mediators, including inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and interleukin-6 (IL-6). Additionally, FAE acts as a direct scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS), providing protection against oxidative cellular damage. It has been investigated in clinical trials as a topical treatment for mild to moderate atopic dermatitis and has shown potential in preclinical studies for the prevention of UVB-induced photoaging and the regulation of melanogenesis.
