Overview

Fidaxomicin is a narrow-spectrum macrocyclic antibiotic of the tiacumicin class, used primarily for the treatment of *Clostridioides difficile*-associated diarrhea (CDAD) in adults and children aged 6 months and older. It is minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, acting locally to kill *C. difficile* bacteria with limited disruption to normal gut flora. Fidaxomicin is bactericidal and works by inhibiting bacterial RNA polymerase, thereby preventing bacterial growth. The drug was originally developed by Optimer Pharmaceuticals, later acquired by Cubist Pharmaceuticals, which was subsequently acquired by Merck. It is marketed under the brand name Dificid[1][2][3][4][5].
