Overview

Filgrastim is a recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) analog produced by recombinant DNA technology. It is used to reduce the incidence and duration of neutropenia and febrile neutropenia in patients undergoing cytotoxic chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation. It also treats neutropenia caused by other conditions such as HIV/AIDS or radiation exposure. Filgrastim stimulates the production of neutrophils by binding to the G-CSF receptor on hematopoietic cells in the bone marrow and promoting their proliferation and differentiation. The drug is not a cancer treatment but serves as supportive care to lessen bone marrow suppression secondary to cytotoxic treatments.
