fimaNAc is a proprietary drug delivery technology developed by PCI Biotech that enables the light-directed intracellular delivery of nucleic acids. The platform is based on Photochemical Internalization (PCI), which utilizes a small molecule photosensitizer called fimaporfin. Fimaporfin is internalized by cells via endocytosis and localizes within the membranes of endosomes and lysosomes. Upon exposure to a specific light source, the photosensitizer generates reactive oxygen species that disrupt the endocytic membranes, allowing the encapsulated nucleic acid cargo—such as mRNA, siRNA, plasmids, or viral vectors—to be released into the cytosol before they are degraded. This technology is primarily being developed for dermatological applications, where it can enhance the delivery of nucleic acid therapeutics, and for bioprocessing to improve the yield and purity of viral vector manufacturing.
