Overview

Finafloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic indicated for the treatment of acute otitis externa (swimmer's ear) caused by susceptible strains of *Pseudomonas aeruginosa* and *Staphylococcus aureus*. It is available as an otic (ear drop) formulation and works by inhibiting bacterial type II topoisomerase enzymes, specifically DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. Finafloxacin demonstrates enhanced activity in acidic environments compared to other fluoroquinolones. The drug is marketed under the brand name Xtoro and was developed by Novartis.
