Overview

Combination of **finerenone**, a nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist (nsMRA), and **empagliflozin**, a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, used together for patients with **chronic kidney disease (CKD) and type 2 diabetes**. Finerenone selectively blocks mineralocorticoid receptors, providing anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic cardio-renal protection. Empagliflozin inhibits SGLT2 in the kidney, reducing glucose reabsorption and exerting nephroprotective and cardioprotective effects. The CONFIDENCE trial demonstrated that this combination significantly reduces urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR), indicating a reduction in albuminuria and greater kidney protection than either agent alone. The combination shows an additive or synergistic effect on kidney outcomes, with an acceptable safety profile in the target population[1][3][4][5][7].
