Fingerprick autologous blood (FAB) is a bedside biologic therapy that utilizes a patient's own whole blood, obtained via a lancet finger prick, for the treatment of ocular and oral surface disorders. Developed as a simpler and more cost-effective alternative to autologous serum (AS) eye drops, FAB does not require venesection, centrifugation, or specialized cold chain storage. The therapeutic effect is mediated by the delivery of endogenous growth factors—including epidermal growth factor (EGF), transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β), and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)—as well as anti-inflammatory mediators and vitamins naturally present in whole blood. These components mimic the complex biochemical environment of natural tears and saliva, facilitating epithelial cell proliferation, survival, and wound healing. FAB is primarily investigated for severe dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), persistent corneal epithelial defects, and xerostomia (dry mouth).
