Overview
Fipamezole is a selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor antagonist developed as a small molecule pharmaceutical. Its primary mechanism of action is the antagonism of alpha-2 adrenergic receptors, which leads to increased release of norepinephrine and other neurotransmitters. Fipamezole was investigated primarily for the treatment of dyskinesia in Parkinson's disease and has also been studied for potential use in other central nervous system disorders such as depression and alcohol dependence. The drug was originally developed by Orion Pharma (Finland) and later licensed to Santhera Pharmaceuticals for further development. Clinical trials reached at least Phase 2 for Parkinson's disease-related indications, but development appears to have been discontinued.
