fIPV (fractional-dose inactivated poliovirus vaccine) is a polio vaccine that utilizes a reduced dose (typically one-fifth) of the standard inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV). It is primarily administered intradermally as a dose-sparing strategy to address global shortages of IPV and enhance vaccine accessibility, particularly in countries transitioning away from oral polio vaccine (OPV). fIPV aims to induce a protective immune response against poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3, thereby preventing poliomyelitis. Studies are ongoing to evaluate its safety, reactogenicity, and immunogenicity, including comparisons of intradermal versus intramuscular administration and its use with adjuvants like dmLT.
