Drug intelligence / Profile preview
First Defense is a veterinary product designed to prevent neonatal calf scours (diarrhea) by providing passive immunity through orally administered antibodies. The product contains dried colostral antibodies derived from hyperimmune bovine colostrum, specifically targeting K99+ Escherichia coli and bovine coronavirus. When administered as a bolus or gel within the first 12 hours after birth, it delivers immediate protection by neutralizing these pathogens in the calf’s gastrointestinal tract. This approach bypasses the need for vaccination of either dam or calf and provides instant immunity against two of the most common causes of scours in newborn calves[1][7][10].
