The supplement contains the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). It was investigated in the clinical trial NCT03048981 to evaluate its dose-dependent effects on platelet function and coagulation in healthy volunteers. The study aimed to provide evidence for clinical guidelines regarding the preoperative discontinuation of fish oil, as these fatty acids are known to inhibit platelet aggregation and potentially increase bleeding risk by competing with arachidonic acid in the cyclooxygenase pathway, thereby reducing the production of pro-aggregatory thromboxanes.
