Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Fish oil triglycerides** is a sterile intravenous lipid emulsion marketed as **Omegaven** by Fresenius Kabi. It is a fish oil-based source of calories and essential fatty acids containing long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, principally eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. The product is approved in the United States for pediatric parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis. In the completed Aalborg University Hospital Phase 2 hemodialysis study, a high-n-3 fatty-acid lipid emulsion was evaluated for acute effects on heart-rate variability, ventricular repolarization, and ventricular arrhythmias as markers of sudden cardiac-death risk. The proposed antiarrhythmic mechanism is rapid elevation of circulating free omega-3 fatty acids, which may alter myocardial membrane electrical stability rather than act through one defined drug receptor.
