Overview

FIT039CT is an investigational small molecule antiviral drug being developed for the treatment of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated conditions, specifically cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). It functions as a selective inhibitor of cyclin-dependent kinase 9 (CDK9), a key component of the positive transcription elongation factor b (P-TEFb) complex. By inhibiting CDK9, FIT039CT suppresses the transcription of viral genes that rely on the host's transcriptional machinery, including the high-risk HPV oncogenes E6 and E7. This mechanism aims to inhibit viral replication and induce the regression of precancerous cervical lesions. The drug was originally identified through research at Kyoto University and has been advanced through clinical trials supported by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). In the context of CIN, it is typically administered as a topical formulation, such as a vaginal ointment, to target the site of infection directly.
