FITC-sinistrin is a fluorescently labeled diagnostic agent used for the quantitative assessment of glomerular filtration rate (GFR). It consists of sinistrin, a naturally occurring polyfructose isolated from Urginea maritima, conjugated with the fluorescent dye fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC). Sinistrin is an ideal GFR marker because it is freely filtered by the glomeruli and is neither reabsorbed nor secreted by the renal tubules, nor is it metabolized. The addition of the FITC tag allows for the transcutaneous (non-invasive) measurement of its clearance from the blood using a dermal optical sensor, eliminating the need for repetitive blood sampling or urine collection. This technology, often associated with MediBeacon's monitoring systems, is used in both preclinical research and clinical development to monitor kidney function and detect early signs of renal dysfunction or chronic kidney disease.
