Overview
FITOPROT is a mucoadhesive phytomedication (herbal medicine) developed for the prevention and treatment of oral mucositis (OM) induced by radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy in patients with head and neck cancer. The formulation is a combination product containing curcuminoids extracted from *Curcuma longa* L. and a glycerinated extract of *Bidens pilosa* L. It is designed as a mouthwash that adheres to the oral mucosa, providing a localized therapeutic effect. FITOPROT works by modulating the inflammatory response, specifically by controlling the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and reducing salivary nitrite levels. Clinical trials have investigated its efficacy both as a standalone treatment and in combination with photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy to reduce the severity and incidence of ulcerated OM.
