FK962 is a small molecule compound developed as an enhancer of somatostatin release. It is structurally related to FK960 and has demonstrated cognitive-enhancing and neurotrophic properties in preclinical studies. Mechanistically, FK962 increases somatostatinergic nerve activity in the hippocampus, stimulates neurite outgrowth and regeneration (partly via induction of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor, GDNF), and ameliorates memory deficits in animal models of cognitive dysfunction. It has been investigated for potential therapeutic use in Alzheimer's disease and retinal neuropathy but development was discontinued after Phase 2 trials[1][2][5][7][10].
